The Health Ministry Program is designed to promote wholistic
health by encouraging and supporting the development of health
ministries in faith-based congregations. The SSJCF
provides both program support, as well
as grants for collaborative projects:
· increasing community awareness and
knowledge of wholistic health, with emphasis on the spiritual
component, addressing healthy lifestyles, and health equity;
· establishing new health ministries;
· development and stabilization of
existing health ministries; and,
· building relationships and
collaboration among health ministries and with the healthcare
and/or health promotion community.

A
Health Ministry can be analogized as a bridge that connects
people in a congregation to the information and resources they
need to achieve a whole and healthy lifestyle. Health
Ministries work with the faith community, and can serve as an
extension of the medical field.
Statistics show that West Virginians are slightly above
or just below the national average in all the leading causes of death (e.g.
heart disease, stroke). Studies have revealed that, generally, people within the
Appalachian culture are hesitant to accept information and advice from those
that they perceive to be outside their culture. This perception often creates a
barrier to accessing the information, resources, and services they need to
achieve their highest wellness potential, whether physically or spiritually.
