Glossary of Terms

Captial Grant
Request: |
A proposal requesting funding for construction, repair, or
renovation of a building; for other types of construction, repair, or
improvement projects related to property owned by the organization; or, for
equipment.

|
Challenge Grant: |
A
grant that is paid only if the donee organization is able to raise additional
funds from other sources. Funder sets fundraising goal for grantseeker to meet; grantseeker will receive
grant when goal is reached. Challenge grants are often used to stimulate
giving from other donors.

|
Evaluation: |
Procedures you will use to determine the extent to which the program has
achieved its objectives.
|
|
501(c)3: |
The section of the IRS tax code that defines non-profit, charitable,
tax-exempt organizations.
|
|
Goals:
|
The broad outcomes expected from the project. Unlike objectives, not directly
measurable.
|
|
In-Kind Contribution:
|
Donation of goods and/or services (as opposed to a donation of money).
|
|
Letter of
Inquiry, Letter of Intent: |
A one- to two-page letter to the funder
that describes the organization (its history, programs, service area, etc.),
identifies the need/issue the organization plans to address, and outlines its
request for funding.

|
Matching
Grant: |
A grant that is made to match funds provided from another
donor.
|
|
Needs Statement:
|
Outlines the conditions in the lives of your clients or in your community that
you wish to change. It should be supported with evidence drawn from your
experience, from statistics provided by authoritative sources, or from testimony
from people or organizations familiar with the situation. It should be stated in
terms of the needs of your clients or community rather than the needs or
problems of your organization.

Objectives:
|
The measurable steps you will take to narrow or close the gap indicated in the
needs statement. Objectives should state what is to change, how much change will
occur, and by what time change will occur.
|
|
Operating Budget:
|
The annual financial plan for your organization, listing all anticipated
organizational expenses and expected sources of revenue.
|
|
Project Budget:
|
The financial plan for your project, itemized to show breakdown of both income
and expenses. Typical expense items include: personnel costs (salaries,
benefits, consultants), supplies, travel, materials, office space or rental,
telephone, postage, equipment purchase, construction, and/or renovation. Typical
income items include: individual donations, corporate or foundation grants,
program/service fees, and membership dues. If you need assistance preparing a
budget, sample budgets are available from the SSJCF office.

Project/Program Grant Request:
|
A proposal requesting funding for a specific initiative or new endeavor.
|
|
Technology Grant Request: |
A proposal requesting funding exclusively for computers, copy or fax
machines, multimedia equipment (e.g. slide projects, video recorders), phone
systems, or other technological equipment.
|
|
Year-to-Date Budget Report:
|
A report listing actual organizational expenses incurred and income received
since the beginning of the fiscal year, as of the specific day that the report
is prepared.
