WHO The SSJCF was created by the SSJ Health System from monies received when St. Joseph's Hospital (Parkersburg) and Columbia/HCA entered into a joint venture relationship in 1996.

The SSJCF, a separately incorporated not-for-profit corporation, awarded its first grants in July, 1997. 

WHERE The SSJCF serves eight counties in West Virginia (Calhoun, Jackson, Pleasants, Ritchie, Tyler, Wood, Wirt, and Roane); three in Ohio (Athens, Meigs, and Washington).  Projects or proposals funded by the SSJCF must take place in and/or benefit the residents of one or more of these counties.
WHEN Currently, the SSJCF has two funding cycles per year -- spring and fall.
WHAT The four funding programs of the SSJCF are: 
  1. The Community Grant Program

  2. Oral Health Initiative

  3. Health Ministry Initiative  

  4. More Active People (MAP) Initiative

Requests can be categorized as either Capital/Technology or Program Development; amounts range between $500 and $50,000 with the average grant award being $18,000.

WHY The SSJCF strives to continue and expand the health and wellness ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wheeling by:
   * providing financial assistance
   * strengthening collaborative relationships
   * supporting local initiatives
...for projects that promote healthy and sustainable communities in the Mid Ohio Valley.
TO DATE Effective October 4, 2009, the SSJCF has funded nearly 606 requests totaling approximately $9.65 million.  These projects have ranged in size and scope from playgrounds, to youth centers and mentoring programs, to health clinic expansions. (recent grants)
